Project Overview:
Responsibilities
During this project we had 3 people working on creating assets, my responsibilities during this project were:
Packaging
Social Media Posts
Information Leaflet
The Problem:
It takes 5 minutes for a knife crime victim to bleed to death, but an ambulance takes 7 minutes to arrive on scene.
In incidents involving knife or gun crime, the average ambulance response time is 7 minutes—yet it can take as little as 5 minutes for a person to bleed to death. In these critical moments, immediate intervention is often the difference between life and death. However, police officers, often lack the tools or confidence to deal with such situations.
The Solution:
The HERO device empowers police officers and bar staff to act like a hero in critical situations.
HERO empowers non-medical first responders to take life-saving action in the moments that matter most. Developed by Act Medical, this device is placed directly into the wound to control internal bleeding through a tamponade effect.
Branding:
Branding
The branding uses bold, eye-catching reds paired with clean sans-serif fonts to create a strong visual identity. A key element in the design is the wave element which, when combined with the red colour, represents a flowing cape. This visual nod to superhero capes, like Superman’s, helps build a sense of trust and reinforces the idea that using the device can turn an everyday person into a hero.
The classification was developed after naming the device, intentionally designed as an acronym to reflect its purpose. It explains what the device does and how it functions in medical terms. Overall, the branding is centered around empowerment, encouraging police officers and bar staff to step in during critical moments. The HERO device is designed to buy precious time for victims, allowing emergency services to arrive before they bleed out.
Social Media Posts
Handwritten elements are used to create a personal, emotional connection with the audience, adding a human touch to each individual story. The Act Medical Instagram feed will feature powerful testimonials from real-life heroes, alongside educational content about knife and gun crime, aimed at informing and engaging the general public.
To further build community and awareness, hashtags like #HEROoftheWeek will spotlight stories of people who have saved lives using the device. The platform is designed to resonate with police officers and hospitality staff—while remaining accessible to a wider public audience.
Information Leaflet:
Leaflet
The target audience for this information leaflet is police procurement officers. They are responsible for purchasing equipment for the police department so an information leaflet that can be sent in the post or given out at conventions is an important touchpoint to get this device to the police.
The leaflet contains relevant information and statistics that explain why HERO is the right device for them. There is also information about the core features and how to use the device. The back of the leaflet has a labelled outline of the device, instructions, and testimonials so that the police procurement officer can make an informed decision.
Packaging:
Sterile Packet
The sterile packet is small enough to fit in a pocket or police uniform, making it easy to carry around. The bright red colour stands out in emergencies and quickly signals that it’s related to bleeding. The layout of the packaging highlights the name of the device and what it’s used for, so there’s no confusion or wasted time figuring it out. On the back, there are simple, easy-to-read instructions with images to show how the device works at a glance.
Secondary Audience:
HERO Kit
Our secondary audience is bar staff and security, since knife crime often happens at night and alcohol is usually involved. We wanted to make sure bar staff know how to use the HERO device in case they ever need it.
That’s why we designed a HERO kit with all the essential tools for a medical emergency where someone is at risk of bleeding out. Having this device on hand in a bar setting gives the victim a better chance of surviving until the ambulance arrives.
