Crowded Mind: An Animated Horror Trailer

A trailer for a film representing the feeling of social anxiety through horror themes

This project was a collaborative effort with the animation department, our goal was to design a monster and create a trailer for a horror movie using animation techniques. We were also tasked with developing branding and marketing materials to support the project. Our team of six was divided into two groups—half animators and half designers—and we allocated tasks based on our strengths. My primary responsibility in the project was to design the movie poster, along with a banner and logo. The theme of the film revolves around social anxiety, and our idea was to design a monster that embodies the sensation of constantly being watched. This creature is a personification of anxiety, shadowing the main character wherever they go, symbolizing the ever-present weight of their fears.

For this project, I created the logo design to reflect the theme of social anxiety. The letters at the start and end of each word are larger, symbolising the overwhelming feeling of anxiety looming over you. I used sharp serifs to give the text a more unsettling, tense feel. The custom font was designed to resemble the monster's claws, capturing its chaotic, intimidating presence and adding to the overall discomfort and tension that the character experiences.

For the poster design, I created a hand-illustrated skull composed of many scribbled lines, which represent the chaotic nature of constant overthinking and racing thoughts that often accompany anxiety. The fragmented, sketchy lines are meant to visually convey the overwhelming mental noise that anxiety can create. The shape of the skull is also inspired by the monster’s design, intentionally humanized to make it feel more unsettling and relatable, adding an eerie sense of vulnerability and discomfort. To further emphasize the theme of anxiety, I placed the title both above and below the main image. This strategic placement was intended to mirror the feeling of being trapped, with the text feeling crowded and suffocating, just like the pressure of anxiety. The layout reflects the tension and claustrophobia that comes with being overwhelmed by one's thoughts, contributing to the overall unsettling atmosphere of the poster.
